The Bay of Islands Vintage Railway

Gabriel front view kk stationThe Bay of Islands vintage railway currently operates between Kawakawa and Taumarere where you can enjoy a picnic and BBQ area.
Gabriel, a steam engine built in 1927, is the star of the vintage railway show. Highlights include travelling through Kawakawa, one of the few towns in the world with a vintage train through the main street and over Long Bridge (the longest curved wooden bridge in the Southern Hemisphere)
From Russell – Orongo Bay Holiday Park catch the car ferry to Opua. You can walk or cycle to  Taumarere and then catch the train to Kawakawa and back. Alternatively drive to Kawakawa and take the train to and from  Taumarere.
Cyclists using the Twin Coast Cycle Trail can carry their bikes on the train to Kawakawa in a custom built cycle wagon.
