1. What is a Holiday Park?

Holiday Parks were known as camping grounds. They offer tent and powered campervan sites and most parks offer cabins and motel style accommodation.

At Russell – Orongo Bay Holiday Park we can offer you many types of cabins, some cabins with bathrooms and kitchens and all bedding ( motel type) some cabins with kitchens and use of shared bathrooms and some cabins with shared bathrooms and kitchens.

2. What is a powered site?

A campervan is like a laptop it needs to be plugged into charge it up. Holiday Parks will have a number of powered sites and you will be allocated a specific site to plug in.

At Russell – Orongo Bay Holiday Parks we let our guests choose their own powered site, except over Xmas and New Year which is the peak season.

3. How do holiday parks charge?

Campervans are charged on a site basis including two guests. Site rates range from $30 – $50 for two guests. Additional guests will be charged.

At Russell – Orongo Bay Holiday Park it is cheaper to stay with us from May to September, during our late autumn, winter and early spring season. Daytime temperatures can reach 20 degrees in May and September, with an average of 16 degrees centigrade in winter. In summer the daytime temperature can reach 30 degrees centigrade.

Russell – Orongo Bay holiday Park is situated in the best climate in New Zealand and enjoys a lot of sunshine over winter.

4. How many holiday parks are there and where are they located?

There are over 400 holiday parks located throughout the country. Many are in scenic spots such as lakes, beaches and rivers. They are holiday parks in all cities and most towns of New Zealand.

Russell – Orongo Bay Holiday Park is in the famous and beautiful Bay of Islands and a couple of kilometers from the historic village of Russell.

5. What security is provided?

Holiday parks are open to guests only and park operators take guest safety and security seriously.

6. What facilities do holiday parks offer?

Holiday parks will provide guests with the following :

  • Laundry facilities
  • Bathrooms – showers and toilets, usually separate male and female
  • Kitchen facilities – oven, stoves, hot water. Some will provide rice cookers on request
  • Guest Lounge with TV
  • BBQ
  • Fresh Water
  • Dump stations for sewerage waste

At Russell – Orongo Bay Holiday Park we offer the above facilities as well as wi fi, internet kiosks, swimming pool, children’s playground, store and outdoor eating areas together with a tranquil natural setting and lots of birdlife.

7. How do I book a campervan site

If you are stay at a holiday park ask the operator and they will book your next park. All parks have websites and you can also book through i-Site information centres.

8. How far is it from Auckland Airport to the Bay of Islands?

The Bay of Islands is about 160 miles or 260 kilometres from the Auckland airport.

  • By car it takes 3-4 hours depending on your style of driving and whether you make the most of your trip to Russell by stopping to admire views or for refreshments.
  • By plane from Auckland to Kerikeri Airport, it takes about 40 minutes. Then by car or shuttle take SH10 south then follow signs for Paihia. At Paihia follow signs for Opua and the Russell vehicle ferry then on to Russell.
  • By bus it takes approximately 5 hrs including travel from the airport to the Downtown Bus Terminal at Sky City.

9. What is the easiest way by road to get to Russell- Orongo Bay Holiday Park?

The most direct road access is via the vehicular ferry which regularly departs from Opua. Follow State Highway 1 from Auckland to Kawakawa and then on to State Highway 11 to Opua. The ferry ride is approximately 10 minutes. The last ferry from Opua is at 10pm. Russell – Orongo Bay Holiday Park is approximately 5 kilometres along the road from the ferry on the right.

Alternatively you may choose to enjoy the scenic coastal route via the fully sealed Old Russell Road meandering past coastal bays like Helena Bay and Oakura. Take the right hand turn off for Russell Road at Whakapara, north of Whangarei and drive for approximately 1.5 hours until you reach a T intersection. Then turn right and the Park is 500 km away on the right.

10. Can I get assistance to park my campervan

Just ask the park operator when you check in and they will assist you with parking and connecting to power. You will find Russell – Orongo Bay very happy to assist you when you need help.

11. Where can I get information on local activities, attractions, shops and restaurants?

All parks can provide information on local attractions. Many will book these for you.

Russell – Orongo Bay Holiday has a free booking service for all trips and tours in the Bay of Islands. There are a number of free attractions and walks in the Russell area and we are happy to provide our guests with information about free and low cost activities and attractions.
